K9 Rescue Me does not have it’s own adoption program, but we do support all our member groups in all of their initiatives. Unfortunately all of our Rescue Members are always in desperate need of Foster Homes. If you think you might be interested in Fostering, please read the information below and complete a foster application, indicating the breed(s) that you are interested in fostering.
K9 Rescue’s run solely on the efforts of their dedicated volunteers. Foster homes are a very significant part of the Rescue Programs. Without available foster homes, our Rescue Groups cannot continue to help so many dogs in need. Many of our groups have a great network of foster homes, but still encounter problems with availability, so generally there can never be too many foster homes! Without a large network of foster homes the unfortunate reality is that some dogs will not be able to be saved.
What does it take to be a Foster Home?
Becoming a foster home is a big commitment. Even though you will not have this dog with you forever, you are committing to helping a dog during a difficult transition time in their life. It takes special dedication, love, and understanding, to support a dog in need while they wait for their forever home. There is more to becoming a good foster parent than just walking and feeding your foster dog.
What will I need to be a Foster Home?
Here’s what we ask that a foster home has for their foster dog. In some circumstances some of these items may be available on loan, but if you are going to become active in the foster program you will likely need these items of your own.
- A safe & loving place for your foster
- Crate – appropriate size to the breed you will be fostering
- Proper equipment & products to groom and bathe a dog
- Feeding & water dish
- Dog bed – it is important that your foster have their own spot to sleep
- Food
- Exercise
- Administration of any medications
- Transportation to vet appointments when necessary
- Most importantly TLC
The Rescue will provide all medication and cover all veterinary costs associated with the foster dog.
What will I have to do as a Foster Parent?
Foster homes are expected to teach the dogs manners and to acquaint them with the general living guidelines and house rules. In addition, they need to determine if the dog can be left alone in the house without exhibiting destructive behavior as well as to provide adequate opportunities for the dog to determine how it reacts in different situations. Foster parents are responsible for communicating what kind of personality the dog has, and what circumstances they feel may be suitable for him or her. This makes it much more likely that we can arrange a successful adoption.
Generally speaking foster homes provide food for the foster dog though we sometimes receive donations to supplement this. Veterinary costs are paid by the Rescue.
Foster homes will have constant support and contact with Rescue and while it can be difficult, being a foster parent for a rescued dog is about as satisfying as anything one can do.
What can I expect when Fostering?
Every dog that enters a rescue program is special in their own way. All dogs have different requirements on what they will need in a foster home. All of the Rescue’s that are members of K9 Rescue Me are careful to ensure that they place foster dogs in foster homes that they will thrive in. It is important that your foster will be provided with the tools to succeed, we do not want to set them up to fail. We will ensure that a foster dog placed with you meets the needs of your lifestyle, be sure to complete the foster application thoroughly, make sure to let us know if you have a cat, other dogs, what their personalities are like, do you have children, what are their ages. We will ensure that if you have a cat and children that your foster dog is ok with cats & children.
Some fosters come in on a short term basis; you will provide them with TLC while they get ready for their forever home. Some fosters come in and will need to stay a bit longer; they may need some extra time to prepare for their new home. We will be sure to check with you on your availability at the time when we ask you to foster.
You will be a key part of the dog’s journey to their forever home, and will be active in choosing the right home for them. You will help create a happily every after.
Here are just a few good reasons to become a Foster:
- Everyone agrees two dogs are easier than one! You might be surprised to see how helpful your dog can be with your foster dog.
- Fostering is ideal for someone who has a busy travel schedule and cannot commit to a dog full time, but could manage a week to a month at a time.
- Fostering is perfect for those who want to make a difference. These dogs really need a loving hand.
- Fostering a senior dog, that often gets overlooked for a permanent home quickly teaches you the value at all ages and the great need not to judge a book by its cover.
- More than anything, the groups involved with k9 Rescue Me desperately need foster homes. You will be making a difference in a homeless dog’s life – because of you rescue is possible!
